CalTrans Homepage

CalTrans has a homepage on the World Wide Web. Permit information will be available through the homepage in February. The most up to date information on road construction will be available as will manual and forms.


Permits for Transporting Trusses

Policy requires legal length and height for these items but extralegal height is allowed when the item is transported on a slant. There was much discussion as to whether this was a workable law but for now it stands.


Automated Permlt Evaluation (APE)

This is a program where an envelope vehicle can travel statewide after registering the routes of travel and checking for construction or maintenance activity. This program, once implemented, will be almost like writing your own permit. It will be done either through fax or modem, and will handle 5-axle green weights. When the test program is implemented you must apply to participate.


Variance Program

There was a lot of discussion regarding workloads at the regional level, turn around time for permits, and the fact that a number of employees writing permits are still undergoing training. Rick Hill brought up the fact that since the fax system opened up a way to bypass using a permit service, a lot of time is used in contacting trucking companies who are inexperienced in Hlling out permit applications. Route Clearing DataBase Program

CalTrans has finished and has available now the computer database program for routing. This includes bridge heights and problem areas. This program comes on two 3.5 diskettes which require:
