CIOMA has been advised by CalTrans that they will be soliciting names of companies who clean up hazardous substances. CalTrans does not recommend specific companies, but they do use a list of companies who can provide the cleanup in the event the driver does not request a particular company be called. CalTrans prefers to use the company that can respond the fastest to the scene.

CalTrans explained that the following procedure is used when a hazardous spill occurs on California highways. A CalTrans worker or a CHP officer gives the company who is transporting the hazardous substance the choice of who to call for cleanup. If the driver of the truck indicates a specific company to be used, then that company will be called first and used if they can respond immediately. If the driver doesn't have a preference of cleanup companies, then CHP or CalTrans will contact the truck owner or trucking company. If CHP or CalTrans cannot obtain the necessary information from the truck owner, or if the owner has no preference, CalTrans calls from a list of routinely used hazardous cleanup companies. CalTrans is currently updating their list by soliciting hazardous material haulers and related industries for referrals of reliable companies for cleanup of hazardous materials spills.

If you would like to suggest a hazardous material cleanup company, or companies, please fax the names, addresses and phone numbers to CalTrans at (916) 653-3291, Attention: Dale Ten Broeck, Maintenance and Emergency Services Division.
